Professor Giorgio Giovanelli obtained his baccalaureate in theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome in 2000. In 2003 he obtained a Specialization in Moral Theology at Lateran University, and in 2004 he obtained a first-class master’s degree in bioethics summa cum laude at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. In 2006 Father Giovanelli completed a Ph.D. in Moral Theology at the Lateran University, and in 2013 he obtained a diploma from the Apostolic Rotae Romanae Tribunal on the procedure to obtain a dispensation from a marriage ratified and not consummated. In 2015 Father Giovanelli obtained a Specialization in Canon Law, and the following year he earned a Ph.D. in Canon Law, both at the same Lateran University. Since 2016 Father Giovanelli has taught various canon law classes at the Lateran. Father Giovanelli is skilled in penal trials and substantive penal law. He also serves as the Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Fano, Italy, as well as the Rector of the Fano Cathedral. Earlier in 2023 he was appointed to serve as a commissioner at the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. In April of 2023, he gave a lecture for the Graduate Student Association at The Catholic University of America on the Reform of Penal Law in the Church.
